The more passionate and knowledgeable you are on a topic the easier it is to sell - and if its a small niche - even better! A little newbie is NOT going to compete with the huge promoters who have thousands of dollars to invest. Pick a small to medium niche that YOU love, find 3-4 sponsors who target your niche (and similar ones - like you said - give them a choice) and as you yourself are into that niche you have the upper hand in selling to surfers who share your tastes. Your written content will be full of genuine enthusiasm for the content you promote - and your surfers will see that and trust your recommendations leading to more sales. Id like to add to your list :)
